Nutrition and MSA: Eating Well for Improved Quality of Life

Living with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) can be a challenging journey, filled with uncertainties and obstacles. As someone who has been on this path for a while, I’ve come to realize that managing the symptoms and enhancing my overall well-being requires vigilance in many aspects of life, especially when it comes to nutrition. In this blog post, I’d like to share some insights into how diet and nutrition can play a significant role in managing MSA symptoms and improving the quality of life.

  1. The Importance of Diet

When I was first diagnosed with MSA, I was overwhelmed by the myriad of symptoms that affected various parts of my body. It quickly became evident that proper nutrition was crucial for managing these symptoms. A balanced diet not only provides essential nutrients for my body but can also help alleviate some of the discomfort that comes with MSA. I was also overweight at the time and needed to drop about 35 lbs to reach a weight where my body was in a better state to fight the demanding fight I was in for. The physical toll MSA takes on your body is tiresome and demanding.

  1. Hydration is Key

One of the primary challenges I face is maintaining adequate hydration. Many MSA symptoms, such as autonomic dysfunction, can lead to issues like orthostatic hypotension, making it difficult for the body to regulate fluid balance. Staying vigilant about drinking enough water and incorporating hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables into my diet has been essential in managing this aspect of MSA. This can be quite  a challenge. AS MSA has a profound effect on your bladder and BP, which means the hydration can cause elevated BP and pressure on the bladder, leading to difficulties managing those symptoms. The ebb and flow can be difficult to manage.

  1. Balancing Fiber and Digestion

Digestive problems are common in MSA, and they can greatly impact daily life. Constipation is a frequent issue, so I’ve had to adjust my diet to include fiber-rich foods like whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. However, it’s important to strike a balance because too much fiber can be problematic, leading to discomfort. Vigilance in monitoring my fiber intake has been key to finding the right balance for my digestive health.

  1. Protein for Muscle Maintenance

Muscle weakness is a hallmark of MSA, and maintaining muscle strength is crucial. Protein-rich foods like lean meats, fish, and beans have been a vital part of my diet to support muscle health. However, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider or nutritionist to determine the appropriate protein intake, as MSA can affect individual needs.

  1. Minimizing Sodium Intake

High blood pressure is another concern for those with MSA. Excessive sodium intake can exacerbate this issue, leading to complications. I’ve had to be vigilant in reading food labels and avoiding high-sodium processed foods. Instead, I focus on cooking at home and using herbs and spices to flavor my meals.

  1. Supplements and Vitamins

Vigilance extends to supplements and vitamins as well. Certain MSA symptoms may require specific supplements, such as vitamin B12 for nerve health, Folic Acid to help generate healthy new cells, Baby Asprin to prevent blood clots and reduce the risk of stroke, and magnesium to help maintain normal nerve and muscle function. It’s essential to work closely with your medical team to determine which supplements are necessary and in what quantities.

  1. The Emotional Aspect

Beyond the physical benefits, maintaining a healthy diet has had a positive impact on my emotional well-being. Knowing that I’m taking proactive steps to manage my MSA through nutrition gives me a sense of control and empowerment.

In conclusion, managing MSA is a complex journey that requires vigilance on multiple fronts, including nutrition. By staying vigilant about our dietary choices, we can significantly impact our quality of life, alleviate some symptoms, and empower ourselves in the face of this challenging condition. It’s essential to work closely with healthcare providers and nutritionists to create a personalized nutrition plan that suits your specific needs and helps you live your best life with MSA. Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and together, we can strive for a better tomorrow through the power of nutrition.

NOTE: The real bitch here is any deviation from these measures can throw everything off. Once you have found your “Personal Potion” that gives you the results you were searching for. you gotta stick to it like glue! The slightest mistake can mess you up.
